I ordered this CD cause I liked the mpeg samples I listened to and as a Vietnamese adoptee, I was drawn to it. I brought it over to my friend's house where her parents listened to it and loved it so much that I'm ordering a copy for them. It reminds them of the "old days" when they were living in Vietnam. All of the songs appear to be traditional Vietnamese music.

Enter the world of Vietnamese music, May 27, 2000
Reviewer: Mary E. Croy from Milwaukee, WI
Tran Van Khe, a reknowned expert in traditional Vietnamese music, displays his mastery of the genre in this magical CD. Anyone with an interest in the culture, music or language of Vietnam should listen to this CD. Poems and songs of lost love, passionate reunion and longing to return to the native land give this CD a universal flavor. I especially enjoyed Nho Rung, (Nostalgia for the Jungle) a poem about a caged tiger, from the tiger's view. Nang Nhac, (The Muse) ends the CD with a sense of wonder and joy.

A moving collection that inspires and embraces an era., February 16, 1999
Reviewer: A music fan from New York
"Vietnam Long Time Coming" is a must have for all Springsteen fans out there. "Shut Out The Light," a song that was written and composed along with "Born in the USA" in the early 80's, is the feature track on the album. It is a piece that explores the difficulties of American boys returning home from a war torn Vietnam to a country that was equally unforgiving. The song is featured in "Vietnam Long Time Coming," the award winning documentary, from World T.E.A.M. Sports and the creators of "Hoop Dreams," that revisits with those same American men and women, some 30 years later, on a trip back to present day Vietnam. It is the story from which this soundtrack is inspired. Emmylou Harris, Shawn Colvin, Soul Asylum, Richie Havens, and Ben Sidran complete the album with music thematic of the message conveyed in the inspiring film. "Vietnam Long Time Coming," a film by World T.E.A.M. Sports, will be broadcast on NBC April 17, 1999 at 4:00pm (EST).

Nineteen eighty-seven's Good Morning, Vietnam was a turning point for Robin Williams, garnering the comic his first Academy Award nomination and leveraging him into the first rank of American film stars. As directed by Barry Levinson, Williams imbues the "true life" story of Armed Forces Radio rebel Adrian Cronauer with his patented machine-gun comic banter, undercut by dollops of now equally familiar tragi-comic bathos. But contrary to the tired hit parade we've come to expect from period soundtracks, the '60s music Williams's character spins here is often a refreshing surprise, drawing from trashy garage-band chic ("Liar Liar" by the Castaways), underexposed British Invasion hits (the Searchers' "Sugar and Spice," "Game of Love" by Wayne Fontana and the Mindbenders), and relatively obscure American chart hits ("Five O'Clock World" by the Vogues, the Rivieras' "Warm California Sun"), all of it gratuitously punctuated by Williams's manic DJ rantings. The inspired revival of Louis Armstrong's "What a Wonderful World" also became one of the 1980s' most unlikely hits. --Jerry McCulley

Tales From Vietnam
Nguyen Le

Amazon Price: $14.22
Audio CD (October 8, 1996)
Act Music; ASIN: B000001YKE

One of my favorite CD's, March 3, 2001
Reviewer: John R. Snyder from Austin, TX USA
Tales From Viet Nam is a work of genius. The cuts are varied and of uniformly high quality. The more I listen to this recording, the more I appreciate the subtlety and creativity with which Nguyen Le has blended traditional Vietnamese elements and instruments with modern Western ones. Such cultural fusions are difficult to bring off convincingly, and he has succeeded where many artists with greater name recognition have failed.

Extremely versatile, February 10, 2001
Reviewer: Chi D. Nguyen from San Jose, CA USA
Nguyen Le is extremely versatile, from Funk to Rock, Jazz/Fusion to World. It is a pleasure listening to this album because the spectrum of music/techniques change from song to song. His techniques combine many styles unlike other vituosos with somewhat signatory chops eg. abstract (John McLaughlin) subtle (Pat Metheny) rapid (Al Di Meola) rocky (Van Halen) emotional (Santana) intense (Jeff Beck) etc. He uses the tremolo bar to retaine micro-tones (the between-notes) which are some of the distinctions and characteristics unique to Vietnamese Music. In this album, his licks are simple but the essence of his music/sound is far more telling. It is quite evident that music and breathing are one and the same for Nguyen Le.

J. B. Lenoir and his African Hunch Rhythms, March 10, 2001
Reviewer: A music fan from Beallsville, Maryland USA
His shrill tenor voice leaps out at the listener as J. B. Lenoir sings of his pain, happiness, and ultimate travails as an American in the sixties. This is not simply "blues" music, in that it covers a whole spectrum of contemporary issues. "Vietnam Blues" personalizes the horrors of war. His pseudo-African rhythms create layers upon layers of rich, almost palpable soul. Lenoir's highly moving, emotional, and thought-provoking lyrics wring sweat from the audience as well as tears. Highly recommended as a piece of American history.

My personal favorite as a blues album., June 24, 1999
Reviewer: A music fan from Maastricht, The Netherlands
Originally released as two seperate LP's (Alabama Blues & Down in Mississippi) back in the sixties, J.B. Lenoir's set of accoustic bluessongs (some of them accompagnied by Willie Dixon on drums; a most unusual combination) remain a personal favorite of mine after 20 years of listening. I like his guitarplaying, his singing, the lyrics, the mood of the songs. Simply great music.

If you want simple blues with a message this CD has it all, January 16, 1999
Reviewer: from London, England
JBs simple yet effective style mesmorises the blues fan from start to finish. The subject material JB uses is diverse (Vietnam to being born black in the South) and the observations he makes are politically astute, sometimes humorous and sometimes sad. I highly rate this CD and would recommend it to anyone! Be prepared for a full on emotional and aural experience.

Volumes 1.1 and 1.2 concentrate on an ensemble of 15 musicians who are among the most respected in Vietnam. They are professors at the conservatories and well-known artists and performers. They present modern "folk" music on traditional and adapted instruments; lutes, one string fiddles, flutes, and percussion dominate the tracks presented, with solo pieces and soloists backed by larger ensembles. Most are theatrical works, carefully arranged and presented, rather than raw field recordings. The western influences are subtle but obvious throughout. One of the standout sounds of Volume 1.1 is the dan bau and an electric cousin. It's a single string attached to a soundboard and a flexible neck. The neck is pulled to create the notes and a glissandi ornamentation, giving the distinct feeling of a slide guitar playing some ancient precursor to the blues. Volume 2 is a major undertaking--one of the few high quality recordings made of the Imperial ceremonial music of the ancient city of Hue. It is a distinctive mix of folk instruments and courtly formality--a highly disciplined and richly ornamented music originally conceived for moments of importance and ceremony. The focus is on the voices and the stories they tell. David Parsons went to Hanoi and Hue to record the music for this set, and he created excellent ambiance as well as choosing wonderful artists and musical selections. Each of the three CDs is also available separately. --Louis Gibson

The essence of Vietnamese Imperial culture...
The artists: This recording features the performance of the Hue Traditional Art Troupe. Artistic direction of the troupe and of this recording is provided by the group's leader, La Thi Cam Van. The troupe has existed formally since 1899 under various names, but existed long before the turn of the century in the form of the official court troupe. The Hue Traditional Art Troupe's setting in the old city of Hue is of great significance, as Hue was the last capital of the Vietnamese feudalist state. Parts of the Old Palace still stand within the city, and when the Hue Traditional Art Troupe performs inside of the ancient architecture, the imperial music of the past is brought to life once again. This recording is produced by David Parsons, who once again utilizes his extenseive experience recording Asian music. Parsons is also a talented composer and musician. The project: THE MUSIC OF VIETNAM, Volume 2 presents the carefully preserved music of the Vietnamese Imperial Palace and Court, recorded in Hue. As opposed to Volumes 1.1 and 1.2 (13082, 13083) of the Music of Vietnam series, which encompass the traditional music of the Vietnamese people, Volume 2 captures the essence of Vietnamese Imperial culture, now an honored component of the country's rich and colorful history. These songs which accompanied ceremonial, congratulatory and interpretive dances, paint a fascinating picture of the ancient culture of which they are a part. The words of the songs praise offerings to Buddha, wish a harmonious life to an Imperial bride and groom, or celebrate the courageous actions of two legendary heroines. Though the words (many of which are translated in the liner notes) may not be understood by every listener, to hear the music is enough to conjure up beautiful images of costumed dancers holding lotus-shaped lanterns. One can almost see the dragon and the tiger which meet in the Tu Linh Dance, or imagine the female heroines in war dress: protective vests and armored trousers, with swords in hand. Each of the pieces included in the recording possesses a symbolic meaning developed over a thousand years, influenced by many dynasties. The Imperial music of Volume 2 represents a part of the country's history as integral as the music of the people contained in Volumes 1.1 and 1.2.

A varied delight, December 30, 2000
Reviewer: clayfolder from Rochester, NY USA
This is a great introduction to Vietnamese music. While some of the selections may sound harsh or discordant to western ears, this is well worth owning. From the percussive and almost jazzy sounding "Dance of the Horse" to the hauntingly beautiful bent notes of the "Monocord Solo", there are many gems on this collection. Its unclear from the notes, but this seems to have been originally recorded between the 60's and the 80's. My first real introduction to Vietnamese music was through the great Celestial Harmonies recordings which are "smoother" and more modern sounding, but this was a great find !

Imaginative arrangements of traditional Vietnamese music, August 3, 2001
Reviewer: David Dahl from Portland, OR USA
Due to several adoption-related trips this year to Viet Nam, I have recently searched for traditional Vietnamese music. Out of the eight more-or-less traditional CDs I purchased in Hanoi and USA, the two CDs by the Vancouver B.C. based Khac Chi Ensemble are by far my favorites. "Moonlight in Vietnam" was the first recording of trad. VN music that I thoroughly enjoyed, and it sent me back to the web looking for more CDs by the Khac Chi Ensemble. I am not qualified to judge if this is "pure drop", but all of the arrangements appear true to the style, instrumentation, and spirit of the best trad. Vietnamese music I have heard. I enjoy the variety of exotic colors from the instruments. I especially enjoy the singing, which is not always easy to listen to on other recordings of traditional (VN) music. Among the instrumental music, the dan bau performances are particularly outstanding, but each instrument is played masterfully. There is plenty of variety from selection to selection, so there is never the feeling that it is all sounding the same. Moonlight in Vietnam stands up well to repeated listenings. Highly recommended.
