Dragon Ascending : Vietnam and the Vietnameseby Henry Kamm Amazon Price: $24.95 Hardcover (February 1996) Arcade Publishing; ISBN: 1559703067 ; Dimensions (in inches): 1.06 x 9.57 x 6.43 From Booklist Americans routinely refer to the country's experience fighting the war in Vietnam simply as "Vietnam," and New York Times correspondent Kamm's sobering look at Vietnam's people today is highly instructive in pointing out the differences and the similarities between the two cultures of then and now. Kamm's first stop is My Lai, where the worst massacre of civilians by GIs took place, and despite constant reminders of the killings, the native Vietnamese are philosophical, almost forgiving. From there it's on to Saigon and Hanoi, where Kamm deftly contrasts the burgeoning capitalism and the communism that's hanging on. Kamm speaks with Vietnamese people in the cities and in the tiny hamlets, where the locals live in poverty as their ancestors did centuries ago, oblivious to the benefits of the Communist revolution. The author's take on U.S. involvement and lack of cultural awareness of the Vietnamese people is hard to argue, whatever your view on the war, and Kamm's prose is flavored with exactly the right amounts of straightforward journalism and passion. Earth and Water : Encounters in Viet Namby Edith Shillue, Kevin Bowen List Price: $17.95 Amazon Price: $14.36 Paperback - 288 pages (March 1998) Univ. of Massachusetts Press; ISBN: 1558491295 ; Dimensions (in inches): 0.69 x 9.02 x 6.03 The author, Edith Shillue / , June 4, 1998 Gathering Stories and creating a sense of "place" Travel memoir combines elements of fiction, history, journalism and romance. I write about places like Viet Nam because they affect and change me through my travel experience. I'm interested in the experience of "place" -the sounds, sight and feel of Asia's cities, villages and towns. I prefer this genre of creative non-fiction and try to craft language to reflect, as closely as possible, the sensual experience of a place. I like to record my interactions with all the elements of a country and culture, particularly the language. As a university lecturer and resident of Viet Nam my angle of vision was from the inside out, but as a foreigner I was continually an outsider. Any traveler to Asia will find that contradiction familiar! As a vistor and a writer I gathered the stories people shared with me and tried to look at them in their historical context. To do this I took everyday, secular life and its events as my cornerstone, finding there endless challenge and inspiration. Read the book and reconsider how you look at Viet Nam. Enjoy! Ho Chi Minhby William J. Duiker List Price: $35.00 Amazon Price: $24.50 Hardcover - 704 pages (September 27, 2000) Hyperion; ISBN: 0786863870 ; Dimensions (in inches): 1.95 x 9.58 x 6.66 Amazon.com Ho Chi Minh (1890-1969) fought for half a century to free Vietnam from foreign domination, and the story of his life illuminates the ongoing struggle between colonialism and nationalism that still shapes world history. William J. Duiker, who served in Saigon's U.S. embassy during the Vietnam War, spent 30 years delving into Vietnamese and European archives, as well as interviewing Minh's surviving colleagues, in order to write this definitive biography. The son of a civil servant from a traditionally rebellious province, the future president of North Vietnam was known for more than 20 years as Nguyen That Thanh. It was under this name that he founded the Vietnamese Communist Party, having concluded after reading Lenin's analysis of imperialism that revolutionary Marxism was the most effective tool to achieve Vietnam's independence. He spent 30 years in exile, cementing his communist ties in Moscow and working with Vietnamese rebels from a base in China, before assuming the name Ho Chi Minh in 1942, when the forces unleashed by World War II seemed to be clearing the way for Vietnamese liberation. French intransigence and American anti-communism would delay the emergence of an independent, united Vietnam for another 30 years, but Ho became an icon who inspired the communist North and the Southern Vietcong to keep fighting. Focusing almost exclusively on political events and ideological debates, Duiker depicts Ho as a nationalist first and foremost, but also as a convinced (though pragmatic) Marxist who believed socialism would help his country modernize and correct ancient inequities. This long, very detailed biography is not for the casual reader, but anyone with a serious interest in modern history will relish a dense narrative that fully conveys the complexities of the man and the issues with which he grappled. --Wendy Smith The New York Times Book Review, October 15, 2000 |
